Explore a city in constant evolution. From its Historic Center, witness to the birth of progress in Colombia, to its modern skyscrapers overlooking the river, Barranquilla is the perfect destination for those seeking authentic culture and a vibrant metropolis that always looks to the future.

Facts you didn't know about Medellin

  • The "City of Firsts"
Barranquilla is called this because almost everything in Colombia began there: it was the first city with airmail in Latin America, the first seaport, the first luxury hotel, and the site of the first soccer and baseball games played in the country.

  • It doesn't have a traditional "Founding Date"
Unlike Bogotá or Cartagena, Barranquilla wasn't "founded" by Spanish conquistadors. It arose spontaneously from the settlement of people seeking trade near the river. That's why its official establishment as a town on April 7, 1813, is celebrated.

  • Why is it called "Curramba la Bella" (Beautiful Curramba)?
It's a play on words. The journalist Juan Eugenio Cañavera reversed the syllables of Barranquilla: "Quilla-Barran." From there it became "Quilla," and then "Curramba" became popular (a derivative of the area's fast and cheerful pronunciation).
